Back in 2007 the groundwork at Hobsonville Point began with a pioneering and hugely successful partnership between Hobsonville Point Land Company (HLC), now Kāinga Ora - Homes & Communities and respected Australian land and community developers, AVJennings.
Since its inception 15 years ago, and with the help of AVJennings, Hobsonville Point has evolved into an exemplary, world-class waterfront neighbourhood that has continuously pushed the boundaries of what is possible in the field of contemporary, urban development.
With land development work now complete at Hobsonville Point, the development team would like to extend a heartfelt farewell to AVJennings and acknowledge their extraordinary contribution to building one of New Zealand’s first-ever masterplanned, medium density neighbourhoods. We recently talked to the AVJennings team about their experience at Hobsonville Point.
Can you tell us about your work at Hobsonville Point?
In 2007 AVJennings was chosen as the development partner at Hobsonville Point, to help create one of New Zealand’s first medium density communities. Working from the masterplan, our role included preparing bare land into lots that stand-alone houses, apartments, terraces, commercial precincts and parks could be built on. We developed a total of 1,592 land lots which, when ready, were passed on to Hobsonville Point’s trusted builder partners, GJ Gardner, Universal Homes, Jalcon Homes and Jennian Homes. We finished our last superlot in December of 2019 which consisted of 169 dwellings.
AVJennings must have witnessed huge change at Hobsonville Point over the years. Can you tell us a bit about this?
The transformation at Hobsonville Point has been incredible to say the least and we’re really proud of the work we’ve done in this unique community. It’s been pretty phenomenal to see the progress over the years - from bare, undeveloped land, some of which was inaccessible, to the busy and thriving neighbourhood that Hobsonville Point is today. One of the best things about being involved in the development from the outset, has been witnessing the integrity of the masterplan vision, quite literally, come to life.
What was it like working in partnership with the Hobsonville Point Development team?
Right from the start, the collaboration between AVJennings and the Hobsonville Point Development team has been extremely powerful and productive - essentially creating the Hobsonville Point we know today. Our team in New Zealand is relatively small, with offices based on Hastings Street, right beside the original Catalina Café. It was also great for everyone involved, to have the support of the wider AVJennings team in Australia - this provided a great deal of additional professional expertise. Hobsonville Point is such a great place to live and work. In fact, our current Project Director, Stephen Webster lives on the Point and still raves about his three minute walk to work!
In your view what is special and unique about the Hobsonville Point neighbourhood, why buy here?
There’s so many positive benefits to living and buying a home in Hobsonville Point. The proximity to the waterfront and the stunning natural surroundings definitely make it a very special place. The quality of the home designs and builds. The fact that the development was so carefully researched and planned make it extremely livable with fantastic community amenity and great schools. It's a short and easy commute to Auckland’s CBD but far enough away to enjoy the serenity of the natural environment and really unwind on the weekends.
There are currently over 6,000 people living in Hobsonville Point and when the development is complete in 2024, it will provide homes for approximately 11,000 Aucklanders. A total of 2,333 homes have already been built with a further 2,167 on the way.
