Kāinga Ora will remove the unsafe Catalina Bay seaplane ramp at Hobsonville Point.

The seaplane ramp has been closed since April 2024 after an independent engineering assessment confirmed it was no longer safe for public use. Work to remove the seaplane ramp will begin in May.

“We have carefully considered a range of options for the future of the seaplane ramp as we understand its significance to the community,” says Nick Howcroft, Acting General Manager Urban Development and Delivery.

“The seaplane ramp has been deteriorating for some time. Removing it completely is the safest and most cost-effective option.

“Repairing it would have meant completely rebuilding the entire structure, which was unfeasible, and any remaining heritage features would have also been removed during this process.

“We recognise this decision will be difficult for many locals. We’re committed to acknowledging the seaplane ramp’s unique history and significance within the area and are working on ways to do this,” Mr Howcroft says.

The recently completed jetty and pontoons located nearby provide safe and accessible water access and are already well-used by the community.

Kāinga Ora will continue to keep residents and Catalina Bay tenants informed as work progresses.
