“My kids are free to bike everywhere”
During lockdown, we all got a tantalising glimpse of what our neighbourhoods could feel like with safer streets. Suburbs usually dominated by cars were temporarily transformed: The roar of traffic was replaced by birdsong, couples strolled hand-in-hand, and kids on bikes took over the road. Cities around the world are now racing to make more space for pedestrians and cyclists, but in Hobsonville Point, people already rule the road. Streets here were designed to put people first, with wide footpaths, plentiful cycleways and a 5km ‘off road’ coastal loop.
