Following an eight-week programme of land remediation work at Te Onekiritea, Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities is pleased to advise that the reserve will reopen for public access on Saturday 1 August.
The work was completed within the estimated eight weeks, with only small areas of tidying up, including grass seeding and levelling of soil, left to complete. The remaining work will not impact access to the Te Ara Manawa coastal walkway, or the dog park.
This extensive programme of work was undertaken by Kāinga Ora as part of the process to vest the 10.7 hectares of land at Te Onekiritea Point to Auckland Council. Kāinga Ora (which was then HLC) made the commitment to retain the area as a public reserve over ten years ago, as part of a wider agreement with the then-Waitakere City Council and the Government, which also included the restoration of heritage sites, as well as the Coastal Walkway, landscaping, streetscapes and cycleways. Since that time, Te Onekiritea Point has become a much loved and very well-used community asset.
