The Catalina neighbourhood's main street is a good example of how thoughtful design can turn a street into much more than just a carriageway for cars. The main road, currently under construction, has been designed as a focal point for residents where people can meet, play or sit in the shade under a tree.

Urban designers, Isthmus, split the street into zones with plazas, planting, street furniture and even play equipment to suit the purpose of each zone. The zones are 'journey, gather, interact, and rest'.

The 'gather' zone will have areas for people to sit and chat while they wait for children to come out of the nearby primary school. Decks and a trail will give pre-school children a place to play while they wait for their older siblings. The 'interact' zone will have lawn to kick a ball about, a water play area and a BBQ and picnic zone.
